history of interact

The Interact Club is a Rotary sponsored service organisation for young people in any four years of a school immediately preceding the university or for young people between the ages of 14 to 18 years whose purpose is to provide opportunity for young people to work together in a world of fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding.

Thus in Malaysia students from Form II to Form VI can join Interact Clubs.

Interact Clubs can be either school or community based, but in Malaysia and District 3300, all our Interact Clubs are school based.

Every Interact Club is governed by a standard Constitution and By-Laws prescribed by Rotary International. Each Interact Club is self governing and self supporting.

The first Interact Club was formed in 1962 in Melbourne High School, Florida, USA. Two months later, the first Interact Club outside the USA was formed in Tanjore, India. By the first anniversary, there were 177 Interact Clubs in 24 countries. As of 30th June, 1997, there are 5,471 Interact Clubs, with a membership of 125,883 Interactors in 93 countries, and this is continuously growing.

In our District 3300, there are 140 Interact Clubs with a membership of some 8,000 Interactors, thus making our District as having one of the most number of Interactors in the world.

Many Rotary Clubs in our District sponsors more than 5 Interact Clubs each and a few even have 9 to 10 Clubs under their sponsorship. These are the Rotary Clubs of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Pudu, Petaling Jaya, Klang and Alor Star.

Many Interacts have later become Rotarians and many have joined Rotary to continue their service.

Rotary International prefaced one of its publication on Youth Activities as follows: -
No matter how ardently Rotarians pursue their good works in the local and world community, these efforts will recede into history unless young people are prepared to assume the mantle of leadership and service when their time comes.

Rotary, therefore, views the development of our young people as being of such paramount importance that its wide range of activities permeates all four Avenues of Rotary Service. In common with all Rotary Clubs worldwide, the Rotary Club in our District are committed in developing the talents and enthusiasm of our new generation and instilling in them a sense of personal and civic responsibility.
